In honor of Mother’s Day weekend, I thought I would write about an issue that plagues me each time we watch a Disney movie … and another, and another…
Where are the Moms?
These movies were listed in the Top 25 Movies from Disney:
Beauty and the Beast – no mom
Cinderella – no mom, but certainly an evil step-mother
The Little Mermaid – no mom
Snow White – no mom, but again, an evil step-mother
Of course, there are movies on the Top 25 list where there are moms but no dads – Toy Story, in particular.
And, movies where there are two parents – Mulan, Sleeping Beauty.
But, four out of 25 of the top Disney movies in the last 100 years, no moms.
I don’t know how Aladdin wasn’t on the top 25 list, but no mom in that one either.
Most of these stories have some connection to mythology, but the creators of the movies certainly aren’t sticklers for staying tied to the original myths. They add and take away from the story lines as necessary to advance the concept of the movie.
What is it in the story line that is lost if they include more mothers in their movies?Nelson and Cora – Goodreads Giveaway – signed paperback copy. Enter here. Josephine: Red Dirt and Whiskey – free on Amazon for Kindle – today, 5/11/2012, only. Download it here.
