Does changing gears = a name change?

What happens when you want to change directions with your creative endeavors?

Do you use a pen name?

What if you are a photographer? A recording artist? A painter, a sculpter?

Do you try to take your current audience with you, even if the new endeavors are nothing like your old ones?

Do you start over? Start fresh?

About melindamcguirewrites

The young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat. ------ William Faulkner, Nobel Prize Speech, Stockholm, 1950

You could always do something really devious like Ian Banks. He sometimes changes his name to Ian M Banks just to confound us.

You could keep your last name and use your initials for the first and middle names like J.K. Rowling. Rumor has it she went with her initials rather than her name, Joanne, so BOTH boys and girls would be more apt to read her Harry Potter stories.

    • I have thought about doing that. C.S. Lewis (one of my all time favorite writers), J. R. R. Tolkien … but even my initials sound “female” to me!! M A McGuire

Oh! I LIKE that, M.A. McGuire! That name almost sounds like something I’ve seen before, though I KNOW I haven’t. They’re trustworthy sounding initials. I have identical twin brother-in-laws, Mathew Allen and Mark Anthony. M.A. is VERY gender neutral sounding to me, maybe even “slightly” masculine. For some reason, I can picture M.A. McGuire writing a “Tom Clancy” type of novel. Does that sound silly? Maybe, but I REALLY like it as a pen name.

Your posts really make me think about things I have never considered before: like what would I call myself if I would name myself (have not found an answer yet ;-> )

Good food for thought. While other musician/songwriters may change names for different projects, I believe I would some fans and create some confusion. Thanks for posing the question!

(edited & accurate version): Good food for thought. While other musician/songwriters may change names for different projects, I believe I would lose some fans and create some confusion. Thanks for posing the question!
